1. Improve Your Digestion:

The key to weight management is effectively metabolizing what you eat, eliminating wastes efficiently and letting the digestive system get a break between meals. Fasting will only further disrupt your metabolism by putting stress on the body. A strong digestive fire is the key to weight loss according to Ayurveda. Using fresh ginger and spices such as fennel, coriander, and cumin in food will result in a better digestion. Cravings and food addictions may be tempered, as the body receives the deeper nourishment it needs from proper absorption and assimilation of nutrients. Sipping hot water or ginger tea throughout the day will also eliminate cravings. Adding grated lemon or orange zest to your dishes not only tastes delicious and fresh but also improves digestion as well.

2. Eat according to your constitution:

Strawberries are Vata-Pacifying In Ayurveda weight gain is a Kapha imbalance, however, the root problem is often not Kapha. Individuals with a Vata imbalance easily gain weight when stressed, overwhelmed or overworked. When Vata is out of balance addictions to food are common. Vata people need regular meals, warm nourishing foods, with warming spices and adequate amounts of ghee or healthy fats. No protein shakes, green drinks, raw salads or coconut oil! Even though touted as a health food, coconut oil is very cold in nature and clogs the channels. Crackers, chips and rice cakes should also be avoided. Pitta individuals should never skip meals or they will get irritable! They need regular meals that are lightly cooked with plenty of dark green bitter vegetables, summer squashes, asparagus, green beans and mild spices such as fennel or coriander. Juicy pears are a good healthy treat for Pitta’s sweet tooth. Kapha individuals are good-natured, stable and not easily stressed. They need to get moving, since they tend to be a little bit lazy. Warming spices and foods are recommended as well as bitter leafy greens and fresh herbs. Cold drinks, coconut oil and raw salads should also be avoided.

3. What to eat when:

Breakfast should be a warm cereal or stewed apples. Ayurvedic experts recommend eating your big meal at midday, which will give you long-lasting energy to power past prime craving time in the mid to late afternoon. If you’re voracious at dinner you haven’t eaten enough lunch. Dinner should be the lightest meal. I cannot over emphasize this point. Digestion is much weaker in the evening, plus lying down to sleep a few hours later further slows down digestion, metabolism and circulation. The body simply cannot assimilate large evening meals properly. The result is that much of the food is digested poorly and eventually creates toxins, fat and excess weight. Especially avoid in the evening: cheese, yogurt, rich desserts, red meat, leftovers and large salads. Green Beans, Fresh Fenugreek and Asparagus Are Great for Losing Weight

4. Conscious Eating Habits:

How you eat your food is even more important than what you eat. Even foods, which normally cause imbalances, will be digested reasonably well if the proper rules are followed. Likewise if you eat the correct food in the wrong way your digestion will be compromised. Agni (digestive fire) is damaged and formation of ama or toxins will follow. I have a problem with protein and green drinks or shakes. I call them astronaut food. They will only slim down your wallet and may be detrimental to your health if consumed in excess. From an Ayurvedic standpoint they will damage agni, derange Vata and disturb the body/mind. If you believe you do not have the time to enjoy a fresh, lovingly prepared sit-down meal, take a look at your life and shift priorities. Every meal should be a sacred ritual. Take a moment to breathe, relax and say a blessing at every meal. No phone, TV, newspaper or work while eating. Your body digests food best when you relax, so eat slowly and sit quietly for 10 minutes after you eat to aid digestion.

5. Cleanses:

I am not in favor of juice fasts or harsh cleanses, simply because they put the body under too much stress. Stress of any kind triggers the fight-or-flight response. In this state, the body not only craves carbohydrates for fuel, but also holds on to fat, particularly around your middle. I do recommend panchakarma, (the massage, steam treatments and internal cleansing therapies of Ayurveda) to be done twice a year to prevent toxins from accumulating and eliminating their buildup in bodily tissues. Panchakarma will result in healthier eating habits, balanced weight and increased energy levels.

6. Exercise:

Enjoy your exercise activity and it will be easier to stick to it. Also, remember that all of us don’t benefit from the same amount or type of exercise. Choose your exercise program according to your constitution. The ideal exercise options to balance Vata should incorporate slow movements, not be too tiring, and help settle the mind and body. Slow dancing, low impact aerobics, tai chi, leisurely swimming in warm water, walking and yoga are examples of Vata-balancing exercise activities. While walking is universally beneficial, Pitta persons might also gravitate towards water sports while Kapha individuals need to add something really energetic such as brisk walking or jogging.

7. Stress reduction:

There are many ways of stress reduction such as aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, chi gong, breathing exercises, and simple yoga poses that will boost your energy and stimulate your metabolism.

8. Ayurvedic Herbs:

An Ayurvedic practitioner may suggest herb formulas that gently detoxify the system while kindling the digestive fire, allowing proper digestion, absorption and assimilation. Excess Kapha in the form of fat and water can be successfully reduced as the herbs contribute to stronger pancreatic, splenic, hepatic and renal functions. Strengthening and cleansing these organs may lead to a more efficient metabolism and regular elimination. These herb formulas should always be prescribed by a licensed health practitioner. However, the following herbs and spices can be safely added to anyone’s daily diet:

Triphala – Triphala can be used daily for rejuvenation and detoxification. Popular for its unique ability to gently cleanse and detoxify the system while simultaneously replenishing and nourishing it, this traditional formula supports the proper functions of the digestive, circulatory, respiratory and genitourinary systems. Most people can benefit from adding Triphala to their regime.

Fennel - Fennel removes mucus and fat from the intestinal tract, and is a natural appetite suppressant.

Fenugreek - Fenugreek seeds burn fat and help absorption. They are useful for dissolving fat within the liver. Fresh fenugreek leaves can be found at the farmer’s markets in late winter/ early spring. They are one of nature’s super-food due to their beneficial effect on fat metabolism, blood sugar and also their cancer-fighting properties.

Fresh Curry Leaves Improve functioning of the stomach and small intestine. They are mildly laxative and thus can tackle multiple digestive problems caused by food intake. They are directly added to food or as an extract in the form of juice added to buttermilk and consumed at the end of lunch/dinner. Ayurvedic research shows that curry leaves may control noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Fresh curry leaves are also known to reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good one (HDL). You can find them at the farmer’s market.

For Ayurvedic herbal and dietary recommendations suited to your constitution, seek the advice of a qualified practitioner.

Facts:

1. Melanoma is the fastest growing and most deadly type of cancer.

2. One out of five Americans will eventually develop skin cancer.

3. 40-50% of Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 65.

4. With awareness, skin cancer can be easily prevented.

5. In Caucasians, most skin cancers present initially on the skin itself, usually in areas of sun exposure such as the face, scalp, back, nose, and arms.

6. In Asian, African, or Hispanic people with darker complexions, melanomas often present in non-sun exposed – or less pigmented – areas such as the palms of the hand or on the nail beds…

Answer These Questions:

1. As a teenager, did you work at least three summers outdoors?

2. Have you had three or more blistering sunburns before age 20?

3. Do you have red or blonde hair, and fair skin that burns easily?

4. Do you have lots of freckles on your upper back?

5. Has anyone in your family had melanoma?

6. Do you have rough, red spots on parts of your body that are seldom – or never – exposed to the sun?

If you answered “yes” to only three of these questions, your risk of developing a melanoma is 20-25 times higher than that of the general population.

Early Detection Is The Key: The “ABCD” System

A is for Asymmetry, or irregularity of shape – meaning that you cannot draw a line through it to create matching halves. Non-cancerous pigmented lesions usually are round and symmetrical (when divided down the middle, their halves have matching shapes), but early malignant melanomas usually are asymmetrical.

B is for irregular Border – common to cancerous growths. Benign growths usually have regular margins.

C is for Color. A harmless growth generally is one color overall and flat. Cancerous growths, however, harbor various shades – from tan to brown to black, sometimes mixed in with pink, red, or white.

D is for Diameter. If the growth measures more than 6 millimeters across (about ¼”), it is dangerous.

All of us – black-skinned to fair – need sun protection. The sun’s ultraviolet light harms our skin, including the soles of our feet and our palms. There is evidence that damage done during childhood and the teen years creates the greatest risk, so we must educate our children.

An annual check-up by a dermatologist is crucial; however, you can also take your health into your own hands by keeping an eye on moles and skin lesions.

“When in doubt, check it out!”

To Prevent Sun Damage And Dangerous UV Rays:

1. Avoid the sun, especially during the hours of 10 AM to 3 PM. As long as the sun is shining, you are getting exposure. Wear a sun block/moisturizer with a minimum rating of SPF #30, 365 days a year, no matter what.

2. Wear a broad-brimmed hat to shade the face.

3. Wear long pants and long sleeves. There are some companies out there that sell clothing and hats especially designed to protect the wearer from harmful UV rays.

4. Wear UV-protecting sunglasses.

5. Reapply sun block after excessive sweating, swimming, or exercising.

6. Wear makeup with UV protection.

7. Avoid tanning beds; they give off UVA radiation which is harmful to the skin.

And finally, in addition to the fact that sun exposure increases your risk of skin cancer, it is also the main cause of wrinkles and premature aging of the skin. Research indicates that 78% of the sun damage that one gets in a lifetime is from incidental exposure. That means that activities such as driving your car, walking to the mailbox, sitting in your office next to a window give you the majority of your sun exposure! We highly recommend Daily Protection SPF 30, like Obagi Nu-Derm Sun Shield SPF 50!

‘K-E Diet’: Feeding tubes used for extreme weight loss.

Would you put a feeding tube in your nose for 10 days to lose weight? That’s being reported as the latest diet craze to hit the U.S., and it’s how some women are getting ready for their wedding photos.

BURN, BABY, BURN

Feeding-tube diet is latest weight-loss craze

Could you stick to an 800-a-day calorie for 10 days? How about by eating no food, and with a feeding tube hanging out of your nose?

The process, known as the K-E, or feeding-tube, diet, is being reported as an “increasingly popular” alternative to ordinary weight-loss programs.

From Good Morning America:

“The program has dieters inserting a feeding tube into their nose that runs to the stomach. They’re fed a constant slow drip of protein and fat, mixed with water, which contains zero carbohydrates and totals 800 calories a day. Body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis, which leaves muscle intact, Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., said.

“It is a hunger-free, effective way of dieting,” Di Pietro said. “Within a few hours and your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are actually not hungry at all for the whole 10 days. That’s what is so amazing about this diet.”

Di Pietro says patients aren’t hospitalized. They wear the tube and carry the food solution around with them in a bag.

“I get a lot of brides,” he said in a New York Times story. “Nervous eating.”

From The New York Times:

“While the tube diet is fairly unknown in this country, it has been popular for years in Italy and Spain, where it is used casually to lose weight before a big event, as well as for more significant weight loss. In England, where it has been offered for the past year as the KEN (or ketogenic enteral nutrition) diet, The Daily Mail asked if it was ‘the most extreme diet ever,’ before adding that a National Health Service doctor was offering it.”

A bride-to-be featured in the stories, Jessica Schnaider, had the tube removed early because she met her goal in 8 days, losing 10 pounds. She said though she wasn’t hungry, it was not an easy experience.

The Times story puts the price for the procedure at $1,500 for the 10 days, including a screening and equipment.

April 15 marks the 10-year anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Botox for cosmetic use. But it has been nearly two centuries since the toxin was identified. Here’s a timeline in the development of the now-popular wrinkle reliever, beginning in the early part of the 19th century. Apparently, it all started when someone encountered a spoiled sausage.

And the rest is history …

Happy Birthday Botox!

1820s: German doctor Justinus Kerner identifies a toxin in spoiled sausages that causes food poisoning. The paralytic illness caused by Kerner’s “sausage poison” earns the name “botulism,” from a Latin word (“botulus”) for sausage. Kerner speculates that small doses of the toxin might be used to treat nerve disorders and excessive sweating.

1895: Belgian bacteriologist Emile Pierre van Ermengem discovers that Clostridium botulinum bacteria produce the botulism toxin.

1920s: Botulinum Toxin Type A is first isolated from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria in a purified form as a stable acid precipitate by Dr. Herman Sommer at the University of California, San Francisco.

1940s: During World War II, American scientists explore potential use of botulinum toxin as a weapon. The U.S. produces botulinum toxin capsules for Chinese prostitutes to drop into the food of high-ranking Japanese officials. The plan is not put into effect because the military found it to be ineffective as a weapon.

1946: Researcher Edward J. Schantz, Ph.D. succeeds in purifying Botulinum Toxin Type A into crystalline form, for the first time providing scientists with the raw material necessary to study the molecule in greater detail.

1949: Researcher Dr. Arnold Burgen and colleagues in London discover that botulinum toxin blocks communication between nerves and muscles.

1960s: Ophthalmologist Alan Scott in San Francisco injects botulinum toxin into monkeys to see whether it relaxes muscles that cause crossed eyes.

1978: Scott wins approval from the Food and Drug Administration for extensive multi-site tests of botulinum toxin as a treatment for crossed eyes in humans. He calls the drug Oculinum and establishes Oculinum Inc. to make and sell it.

1987: Canadian ophthalmologist Dr. Jean Carruthers (pictured above with her husband) notices that patients injected with the toxin were losing their frown lines. Her husband, Canadian dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers, injects botulinum toxin into the forehead of their receptionist, Cathy Bickerton Swann, to smooth her wrinkles.

Late 1980s: Doctors begin using botulinum toxin as a treatment for involuntary contraction of neck muscles, also called cervical dystonia.

1988: Allergan acquires the rights to Dr. Scott’s product, Oculinum.

1989: Allergan secures the first FDA approval for Oculinum as a treatment for crossed eyes and excessive blinking and received FDA approval to change the name to Botox.

Van Den Boom, who was injected with Botox for neck pain, suffered brain damage, her attorney Ray Chester said. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

February 2012: An Orange County jury hangs on the question of whether Allergan is to blame for a 46-year-old man contracting a devastating disease — Guillain-Barre Syndrome – that he says he got four days after getting Botox injections for back pain. Allergan’s attorney, Vaughn Crawford, said while the company was looking into potential risks in 2008, the year Thomas McGee got his injections, there was no medical evidence that Botox caused the disease.

March 2012: After Allergan alleges its trade secrets were stolen, a federal judge in Santa Ana blocks another company, Merz, from marketing Botox rival Xeomin. U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford says he was troubled that some Allergan employees signed contracts with Merz and then e-mailed themselves Allergan company data before giving their final notice.

March 2012: Allergan discloses it has submitted an application with the FDA for the use of Botox as treatment of overactive bladder in adult patients with symptoms of urinary incontinence who have not responded to other treatments for OAB (overactive bladder).

Some are habits you’re totally aware of and others are seemingly innocent things you do every day that can impact the health and beauty of your skin. Here are a few skin sins to shed, starting today.

Sun sins. Indoors or out, tanning is considered the number one skin sin no-no. Always, always use sunblock when you go outdoors and if you simply must have a little color, consider alternatives like sunless tanners and bronzers.

Lifestyle issues come to the surface. Too much alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate your skin and give it a dull appearance. Smoking has been reported to contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. If you sleep less than 8 hours a night, you’re shortchanging your skin, which could mean dark circles under your eyes.

Don’t be picky. Resist the urge to pick that blemish. This quick fix can be nothing but trouble for your skin. It may look like you’re getting rid of the problem, but you’re actually pushing the bacteria deeper into your skin, which could lead to the formation of even more acne spots. Long-term picking can also create the possibility of scars—so stop picking, pronto. If you have acne-prone skin, make sure to be vigilant about skin care with the Obagi CLENZIderm M.D.™ System.

Put this bad habit to bed. Going to bed with your makeup on is a skin sin that can leave the entire day’s accumulation of dirt, grime, and oil on your skin to seep into pores, clogging them and putting you at risk for acne. Make a clean break with this habit by creating a healthy evening routine where you cleanse, tone, and moisturize.

Some like it too hot. You may enjoy a long hot shower, but your skin can’t take the heat without being stripped of its natural oils. This can result in dry, flaky, itchy skin. Eliminate this skin sin by turning down the heat and lingering less in the shower.

Let’s talk about your phone. Holding your phone against your cheek creates a warm and moist environment where bacteria can thrive, which can lead to skin irritations. Make sure to lightly wipe your phone off daily and alternate which side of your face you hold your phone against to minimize the risk of developing skin problems.

Vitamins get a lot of press, but they’re not the only nutrients that should be on your health radar. To stay healthy, your body needs a daily dose of the right vitamins and certain minerals. One of those crucial minerals is zinc, which affects a variety of your physiological processes and body parts, including your skin.

Zinc is like a 24-hour, on-call skin mechanic. It helps repair damaged tissues and heal wounds. Without zinc, your body’s inside and outside repair time — and possible health costs — go up. Like vitamins, minerals are essential to your overall health and development, helping the body grow and take care of itself. Some research suggests that zinc might be particularly effective in treating topical irritations and injuries, such as acne, skin sores and minor wounds, by helping cells to regenerate.

Zinc’s potential advantages for your skin include the following:

Acne – Using zinc topically and taking it orally has shown some potential in preventing and alleviating the inflammation and scarring associated with acne. Zinc may help nip zits in the bud by reducing the amount of natural oil, or sebum, produced in the skin. It may also help heal damaged skin around acne that does develop. Some research has indicated that acne formation results in part from a lack of zinc in the diet.

Scalp conditions – Dandruff and some fungal infections of the scalp have been shown to respond to the use of shampoos containing zinc.

Diaper Rash – Zinc may help prevent and heal diaper rash.

Another important use for zinc includes protecting skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Whether you realize it or not, you may already be using zinc to prevent skin cancer every time you apply your favorite sunscreen; many sunscreens that provide broad spectrum UV protection contain zinc oxide. Recently, researchers have begun conducting further investigations into the anti-cancerous benefits of zinc by looking at how it may help prevent skin cancer recurrence in cancer patients.

Although more research is needed, studies have also shown that zinc may aid in the treatment of several other skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, burns, boils and leg ulcers. Although more research needs to be done, it seems clear that zinc does yield many potential health benefits for you and your skin. At the very least, zinc has positive effects in tissue healing and is essential for regular cell growth and regeneration.

Read on to learn what food you can eat to get your daily allowance of zinc.

Zinc Foods

Not having enough zinc in your diet can have unpleasant consequences for your skin as well as for your overall health. Wounds may heal more slowly, and you may be more likely to develop skin lesions and acne. Other possible results of zinc deficiency include hair loss, weight loss, lethargy, eye problems and skin rashes.

If the potential results of zinc deficiency don’t persuade you to make sure you’re getting enough zinc in your diet, then you might want to consider potential benefits — faster wound healing as well as alleviation of acne, fungal infections and other skin irritations.

Whether you want to avoid negative consequences or try to gain health advantages, the following foods can help ensure you get an adequate amount of zinc:

Red meats such as beef, pork, lamb and liver

Dairy products

Eggs

Some seafood, including oysters

Nuts, including peanuts and peanut butter

Legumes, or beans

Whole grains

Fortified breakfast cereals

The best way to get adequate zinc is to eat a balanced and varied diet. But don’t overdo it — taking too much zinc can lead to unpleasant side effects, including stomachache, vomiting and diarrhea. Also, it is important to note that fruits and vegetables are not a good source of zinc because the human body cannot use the zinc found in plant proteins in the same way as zinc found in animal proteins. However, fruits and vegetables supply other valuable nutrients that benefit your skin and general health, so keep them on the menu.

Overall, zinc constitutes an important nutrient that provides specific value to your body and your skin. Eating a balanced diet that includes zinc-rich foods will help you lead a healthier life — with radiant, healthy skin.

Most of you may not know that April is Rosacea Awareness Month. In fact, even though 1 in 20 Americans have rosacea, most people with it don’t even realize they have it. Because you, a loved one, or a friend could develop rosacea, take a few minutes to learn a little about this common, yet barely known skin condition.

Rosacea by the numbers. It is estimated that rosacea affects more than 14 million Americans.1 It occurs most commonly in adults age 30 to 60.2 And 30% to 40% of patients with rosacea have a close relative with the condition.3 It tends to occur more often in women but more severely in men.2

Menopause is a red flag. Many menopausal women tend to think they have adult acne when they see red bumps and pimples. However, it is possible that it could be rosacea. In fact, hot flashes might cause the first appearance of rosacea, so visit a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis.

Obagi Rosaclear System

The sooner the better. People often delay treatment, thinking they have a temporary condition that will go away quickly, yet rosacea is reported to worsen with time—so the sooner treatment is started the better. If you have facial redness, acne-like pimples, flushing of the cheeks, nose, chin, and/or forehead, meet with your physician for a diagnosis and to discuss the prescription-based Obagi Rosaclear® System.

Avoid the aggravation. Prevent future flare-ups by avoiding things that can trigger rosacea. It might be helpful to keep a journal because everyone has different triggers. The most common ones include sun exposure, vigorous exercise, caffeine, stress, spicy food, excessive sugar and sweets, and alcohol.

Keep your chin up. According to a National Rosacea Society survey, nearly 70% of rosacea sufferers reported experiencing embarrassment and anxiety because of their condition. The Obagi Rosaclear System incorporates a therapeutic prescription component, as well as products that help calm your skin and minimize the visible redness and blotchiness associated with rosacea. Even better, it is a skin care regimen that is noncomedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores. This can make it easier for rosacea sufferers to face the world and it helps improve their quality of life.

Women of color come in beautiful shades and tones, and we get a lot of questions about skin care that’s specific for women with darker skin. So today we want to share a few beauty tips specially for those with a naturally darker skin tone.

Face the facts of acne. Darker skin is especially susceptible to dark spots and discolorations because of the higher amount of melanin in the skin. Especially in women who have acne, blemishes and scarring may be more prominent. Acne causes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a fancy word to describe a darkened spot on your skin after a cut, scratch, or acne blemish. So it is especially important to avoid picking, squeezing, or otherwise irritating acne blemishes.

Even out dark spots or hyperpigmentation. According to a 2011 survey of more than 1,000 women with skin of color, dark spots, uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation was a prominent concern. Products that contain hydroquinone can help diminish dark spots and even out your skin tone.

Wear sunscreen. The myth that skin cancer only affects light-skinned people is FALSE. A woman with dark skin does have more melanin in her skin for natural protection, but that extra melanin doesn’t protect against the UV damage that accelerates aging or causes cancer. If you have dark skin, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Match your makeup to your skin tone for a natural look. These days, makeup comes in so many different shades and tones, it’s easier than ever to find foundation, powder, or concealer that matches your natural skin color.

Go for the gold. Eye shadows with silver undertones tend to look a bit harsh on darker skin, so use warmer colors that have more golden or bronze tones for a naturally flattering look.

The picture perfect wedding is the result of a year of planning on average. The dress. The flowers. The guest list. It’s no secret the stress of it all takes a toll on your health, especially your skin. If you’re a spring bride or the mother of the bride, there are steps you can take now to help your skin look picture perfect on the big day.

Spring is here but winter took a toll. Exfoliating once a week helps eliminate the damage done by the low humidity and dry harsh winds of the winter. It removes dead skin cells and helps minimize pores so your skin will look dewy fresh as you walk down the aisle. And don’t forget to exfoliate your arms, shoulders and back, especially if the design of your gown draws attention to these areas.

Small switch. Big results. Decrease gradually to totally eliminate caffeine consumption. Replace your lattes with water. Drinking water helps rid the body of toxins and increases hydration. And pumped up hydration helps create radiance and that famous bridal glow.

The mother of the bride shines too. Even though it’s her daughter’s day, the mother of the bride wants to look her best too! Formal gowns often bring attention to the skin on the décolletage. Help restore healthy skin and diminish the signs of aging for this delicate area with the Obagi ELASTIderm® Décolletage System.

Be ready for close-ups. A professional photographer will most likely be capturing the day’s events so both the bride and her mother will want to take special care with their makeup. Starting with a primer creates a base for wedding makeup by giving the skin a smoother texture, minimizing open pores, and making fine lines less obvious.

Get your beauty sleep. It’s not easy when you’re a bride, but try to get some rest. The simple fact is it helps skin look better after a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to dark circles under your eyes. So if you want your skin to look beautiful–get your beauty sleep!

In a society that has become obsessed with youth, there is a growing trend of young women, many still in their 20s, taking dramatic and expensive measures to stop the signs of aging before they happen with non-surgical treatments.

Preventive Botox injections and costly laser skin tightening, a hot radio frequency treatment that tightens and lifts skin that is all the rage among celebrities, are the latest cosmetic procedures used to stop crows feet in their tracks.

Starting early is one of the top tips Dr. Debra Jaliman, a dermatologist on New York City’s tony Fifth Avenue, offers in her new book, “Skin Rules.” She often tells her young patients, if they ask, that the science is clear: Early engagement can stop the clock.

“If you know you’re somebody who’s going in the direction of cosmetics and you know that you’re going to care about lines, then I say it’s better to do it earlier than to wait and do it once these lines have etched into the skin,” Jaliman said. “So if you’re in your 20s and you start to see lines coming, then why not do it early and prevent it? And to me it’s just like exercise.”

However, Jaliman also offers less costly, basic advice for any young woman who is looking to fend off the signs of aging. At the top of the list is getting enough sleep and eating right.

“I can’t tell you all the people who come to me to correct problems they wouldn’t have had if they followed those simple rules,” Jaliman said. “They would save thousands of dollars if they did those simple things.”

Most importantly, she says, young women should stay away from prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds.

“We know sun exposure is cumulative,” Jaliman said. “Even five minutes a day is enough to give you cancer, but it’s also enough to break down the collagen.”

Laser Skin Tightening Treatments jolt collagen under the skin into overdrive, causing the body to produce more, and firm up saggy areas. Patients get the nip-and-tucked look without the surgery, but it comes with a hefty price tag.

“It definitely tightens your skin. There’s no downtime,” Jaliman said. “But it is expensive. To do a whole face could be $600. So it’s an expensive investment, so it’s not for everybody. But I think it’s a good investment.”

Jane Curasco, one of Jaliman’s patients, is a new mother and aspiring actress, with no overt need for any boosting or filling. She said she decided to make a substantial investment in stopping the aging clock at age 31. While her friends have tried lasers and microdermobrasion, Curasco said she was the only one to invest in Laser Skin Tightening Treatments.

“I went on an audition recently and I was supposed to portray a young mother, which I am actually, but every young mother that went in looked 19 so I looked way older than the other people portraying what I actually am,” Curasco said.

The dermatologist said Laser Skin Tightening is so popular in her office that she has seen a new trend of patients who request it as a full body treatment, which costs a whopping $4,000. But if Laser Skin Tightening Treatments is out of reach price-wise, patients can turn to preventive Botox.

Typically, single Botox injections start around $185 and go up from there, and according to American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox usage is up 10 percent among 20-29-year-olds in the past year. But Jaliman said she is not surprised.

“Botox has been around now for almost 20 years. We started using it in the 1990s. It got FDA approval in the early 2000s,” she said. “It’s relatively painless. It’s quick. It’s easy. It’s an office visit. It doesn’t require any surgery. So many people are willing to do it.”

Katy DeMayo was just 28, with wedding bells ringing in her future, when she said she decided to try Botox. Before getting engaged, DeMayo said she never had any intention of indulging in cosmetic procedures.

“When you are 25 you have that mentality that it’s never going to happen to me. I’ll always look this great. I won’t be one of those people that does that. And then it happens. Wrinkles appear,” she said.

Just a month before her wedding day, DeMayo said she wanted her face to have that “extra perk” and to look “sparklier” for her pictures, so she got Botox injections.

She was so thrilled with the results, she said, that she continues to go back to the doctor once a year for maintenance. However, like many young Botox users, DeMayo wasn’t that eager to go public about it. She said before this interview, she hadn’t even told her husband she was getting Botox.

“I’m not going to look like I’m 25 years old, but if I’m 35 and I can look 30, or if I’m 45 I can look 40, I think that’s worth something,” DeMayo said.
