Dermal Fillers Pre and Post Care Instructions

In order to minimize the risk of possible side effects and complications of injections please follow these simple steps:

Pre-Dermal Filler Instructions

  • 2 weeks before Avoid dental procedures This includes cleaning. You will also need to avoid dental procedures 2 weeks post filler procedure.
  • 7-10 days before Avoid taking blood thinners This includes Aspirin and other non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Aleve, Celebrex, Fish Oil. Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E.
  • 7-10 days before Discontinue prescription blood thinners If you are taking prescription blood thinners (for example Coumadin or Plavix) check with your prescribing doctor to see if you are able to stop these medicines for 7-10 days before your appointment and at least 2 days after the procedure.
  • 1 hour before Take Tylenol One hour before your appointment if you have concerns about discomfort.
  • 1 week prior to your appointment Cold Sores? If you have a history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores) on your face, inform your doctor one week prior to your appointment; this will allow us adequate time to prescribe medication to prevent an outbreak.
  • Other considerations: Do not schedule special events or exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you receive your dermal filler injections. Bruising and swelling will be the worst during this time!

Post-Dermal Filler Instructions

  • Common reactions: redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These usually subside after a few days but can last up to a week. If symptoms persist longer than a week, or if you develop other symptoms contact us right away.
  • It does take 2 weeks for you to see the full results of your dermal filler treatment.
  • After two weeks, if you feel there are concerns you would like to address, please schedule a post-follow-up visit with your provider.
  • Avoid excessive touching or massaging of treated areas for about 6 hours after injection.
  • Use a gentle cleanser when washing treated areas such as Cetaphil, Cerave, or Dove unscented.
  • To reduce swelling and soreness: use a cold compress. You may take Tylenol every 4-6 hours to help with discomfort.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours to prevent moving the filler or increasing blood flow to the face.
  • Avoid taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Aleve, Celebrex, Fish oil, Gingko or Biloba, St. John’s Wort, high doses vitamin E) for 5 days after treatment. These can cause an increased risk of bleeding or bruising.
  • Limit exposure to sunlight or UV lamps for 24 hours following treatment. Limit heat exposure and alcohol as they can increase redness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use SPF 30+ combined with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
  • Make-up may be applied a few hours after treatment if no open wounds, bleeding, or signs of infection
  • Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) for 2 weeks post filler.
