We are proud to have been among the first practices in Phoenix to offer Kybella.
Kybella is an FDA-approved (deoxycholic acid) injection that can be used to permanently reduce excess fat below the chin, commonly known as “double chin.” Kybella can also be used for fat reduction in other small fatty bulges such as the front of underarms or fat around the knee. Excess fat accumulation is influenced by multiple factors and can be resistant to diet and exercise.
About submental fullness (double chin)
Double chins (known in the medical community as “submental fullness”) may affect adult women and men of different ages and weights. Both the aging process and genetics contribute to submental fullness. In a recent survey, sixty-eight percent of respondents said they were bothered by their double chin.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-human, non-animal derived version of deoxycholic acid, which is a NATURALLY occurring material found in all of us that helps breakdown fat and absorb it. Since Aprile 2015, Kybella has been FDA-approved to treat double chins. This treatment is effective for drastically improving the facial profile by permanently eliminating submental fullness under the chin.
What Concerns Can Kybella Treat?
Kybella is used as an injection, much like Botox & Fillers (Juvederm and Restylane), in the submental/“double chin” region to dissolve fat away and improve the overall contour of the neck and jawline. Traditional methods to treat excess fat in the neck and under the chin require liposuction and/or a neck lift. Not all patients are candidates for Kybella, there are other options like Coolsculpting to treat double chin fat.
Candidates for Double Chin Reduction Treatments
Patients with consolidated fat deposits and fullness underneath the chin are great candidates for having Kybella. Because Kybella is not intended to remove the skin, patients who have a lot of loose and hanging skin (“turkey neck”) are not good candidates for this procedure. However, these patients may be candidates to have a neck lift rejuvenation procedure like CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing.
Additionally, if you suffer from bleeding problems or already have difficulty swallowing, you may not be a good candidate for Kybella. Dr. Jeffers spends ample amounts of time with every patient and will thoroughly review your medical history to see if Kybella or any procedure is right for you.
After Dr. Jeffers assesses the treatment area, she will mark and grid the anatomic target zone. This process ensures equal delivery of the Kybella, so there is no risk of contour irregularity. The treatment area is subsequently numbed with lidocaine numbing cream or you can add Pro-Nox Nitrous Oxide System for Pain and Anxiety Relief to ensure there is no pain or discomfort from the Kybella treatment. An ice pack is applied while the numbing medicine takes its effect. After a period of 5-10 minutes, Dr. Jeffers injects Kybella into the area of interest. This is a virtually painless process. Ice packs are reapplied for 5-10 minutes. The Kybella permanently destroys the fat cells.
Results Of Kybella
Kybella is a PERMANENT FAT DISSOLVING solution to a heavy neck/jawline. UNLIKE botox or dermal fillers, this treatment is permanent. Your results depend on the amount of excess fat you have under your chin. Most patients begin seeing results 3-4 weeks post-injection.
