The FDA recently announced that it has approved Xeomin for cosmetic use. It joins Botox Cosmetic and Dysport as one of the three injections commonly used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause those pronounced lines. Xeomin has been available to physicians off-label for the past year, but official FDA approval means it is safe and effective to use. Xeomin is a “purer” form of the botulinum toxin, and “it does not have other proteins so there is less immunologic reaction.” Translation: It may be less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
